Simple truths: training & development (T&D) should only be provided to those who need them; learners should only attend T&D courses that they need. This need focuses on competencies required by job performance or future assignment. This goes without saying that T&D courses are driven by competency needs of prospective learners and must therefore be competency-based. In other words, T&D starts with correctly identifying competency needs of prospective learners. Not doing this right or at all sets the entire T&D process down the wayward path. This means incorrectly designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating T&D. This is waste of money, time, energy, and talent. Such is the critical value of competency needs analysis (CNA) to the T&D process. The course is a 2-day workshop on the process of analyzing competency needs of learners as inputs to correctly designing and developing T&D courses and other learning interventions. It provides standards, guidelines, and instructions on how to correctly do CNA in organizations. It advances the strategic competency-based approach to CNA..
1. Describe the basic concepts, principles, processes, competencies, and tools of CNA.
2. Explain how CNA is done in organizations.
3. Analyze and identify competency needs of organizations, work units, and individual learners.
