Background

In an age of rapid changes, the ability to respond quickly and adapt innovative approaches to stay relevant and competitive in today’s business environment is essential in creating a more sustainable world. By leveraging the existing technologies and new practices or processes in the field, the goal is to generate solutions that would strengthen the economy and address emerging issues in the labor force. The envisioned outcomes should provide solutions to the identified problems related to People Management.

Join us in our second cycle of HR Innovation Hackathon and pitch your brilliant ideas in addressing the challenges related to accelerating employee experience. It is time to learn from one another and collaborate on innovative ideas together.

Participants

The competition is open to all students, professionals, and aspiring start-up companies in the Philippines. Participants are highly encouraged to form a team of 4 or 5. Members of the PMAP Research Committee, organizers, volunteers, judges, sponsors, or in any other privileged position at the event are discouraged to participate. Each team should register at https://attendance.pmap.org.ph/research/innovator/

Individuals who wish to participate in the event can still register on the website. Click here to register as an attendee or participant.

Mechanics

I. Registration

Each team should register via PMAP Hackathon website. Information about the participants should be provided along with the team name and role designation. Registration is free for all participating teams.

Participants will receive a welcome message via email after successful registration.

II. PMAP Hackathon Kick-off

To kick-off the Hackathon proper, a mini event, consisting of lightning talks and workshops, will be conducted. All participants will be gathered virtually to meet fellow participants and event organizers.

The lightning talks and workshop series is comprised of the following:

  • Business Model Creation and Pitch. Get tips on how to design your winning business model and how to deliver a killer pitch presentation!
  • How to design your presentation. Learn how to design a pitch deck that will impress your future investors and sponsors with the help of Canva.
  • Patent Application & Protection. Be aware of your intellectual property rights and get informed on how to protect your innovative ideas.

III. Ideation

  • Once the hackathon officially begins, the team will have two (2) weeks to work on their solutions and prepare the requirements. The solution can be any unique innovation using science and technology, providing a creative and sustainable strategy to solve the problem.
  • Teams cannot work on ideas that have already been done and presented in other Hackathons or other competitions. Solutions shall be subject for review of originality to protect against plagiarism, intellectual property, and other related issues.
  • Teams can also use libraries, frameworks, or open-source code in formulating their solutions. Working on a project before the event and open-sourcing it for the sole purpose of using the code during the event is against the spirit of the rules and is not allowed.
  • During the two-week ideation period, teams can consult with the PMAP Hackathon committee for clarifications.
  • The solution to the problems will not be limited to any format. The participants may choose to develop (i) a HR Program along with the framework and simulation, (ii) algorithm with corresponding prototype. However, it is suggested that the valuation of the solution should follow the requirements specified by PMAP.

IV. Requirements

Each team is required to submit the following requirements that will serve as the basis for judging.

1. Documentation of the solution. This document explains the idea behind the solution. It should also describe the methods and laying outflows and features.
—- HR Programs and framework – pdf file containing the design and simulation results
—- Algorithm – code file and application.

2. A short video pitch about the solution that contains information about the solution and a demo of the simulation or application. This will be the elevator pitch which will be 3-5 minutes long and will be used to shortlist three (3) finalists who will advance to the pitching stage.

3. Pitch Deck (in ppt and pdf format) following the Sequoia Capital format:

  • Company/ Team Purpose. define your team/company in a single declarative sentence. This is harder than it looks. It’s easy to get caught up listing features instead of communicating your mission.
  • Problem. Describe the pain of your customer. How is this addressed today and what are the shortcomings to current solutions.
  • Solution. Explain your eureka moment. Why is your value prop unique and compelling? Why will it endure? And where does it go from here?
  • Why now? The best companies almost always have a clear why now? Nature hates a vacuum—so why hasn’t your solution been built before now?
  • Market Potential. Identify your customer and your market. Some of the best companies invent their own markets.
  • Competition / Alternatives. Who are your direct and indirect competitors. Show that you have a plan to win.
  • Business Model. How do you intend to thrive? How long is the return of investment?
  • Team. Tell the story of your founders and key team members.
  • Financials. Cost-benefit analysis
  • Vision. If all goes well, what will you have built in five years?

Deadline of submission is on March 31, 2023, 11:59PM.

Note that the design and output belong to each participating team however, PMAP reserves the right to promote and market the winning entries in the media.

Criteria for Judging

The solutions submitted by the participating teams will be evaluated by a panel of judges composed of a member of the PMAP Board of Trustees, HR leaders and practitioners, a subject matter expert in coding, and industry leaders in the country.

The following criteria will be used to judge the solution of each team:

  • Realistic Capability (40%) – Is the purpose/vision of the solution clear? Was the solution designed and presented properly? Is the solution practical? Is it something people would actually use? Does it fulfill a real need people have?
  • Originality (30%) – Does it pull something off that hasn’t been pulled off before? Does it do something new and unique? Is it a reflection of a diverse team’s ingenuity? Is it something a human being would feel delighted, excited, empowered, or even relieved to use?
  • Impact (30%) – How significant and relevant is the problem that the solution is trying to solve? Does that problem affect a market that we know and understand? Does it have a market?

The average score of each team will be obtained. Only three (3) teams with the highest scores will advance to the pitching stage.

Final Pitch

The three teams will be given a maximum of 10 minutes to pitch their solution. A 20-minute Q&A portion will follow the presentation.

In this stage, the judges will assess your written plan, your presentation, and an overall quantitative and qualitative assessment of your project’s viability.

  • Feasibility (40%) – How does your solution transform or disrupt the status quo of the market you are addressing? How does your solution drive change through innovation? What is the scalability of your solution? What is the measure of success?
  • Impact & Sustainability (20%) – Is the solution sustainable in the long term? How are you going to maximize impact?
  • Originality (20%) – What’s the competitive advantage of the project?
  • Presentation (10%) – How well was the project presented? Did it make the solution more compelling? Did it give a good idea of its purpose? Did the team confidently and non-defensively discuss strengths and weaknesses of their business model and strategies?
  • Q&A (10%) – Were the questions sufficiently answered by the team?
